While 48 star flags are
considered common, and at any given time there are
hundreds that can be found for sale in the marketplace,
homemade 48 star flags are very scarce. I'm only
aware of a very small handful--probably fewer than
fifteen-- that are homemade and that exhibit
characteristics other than the typical straight,
vertically aligned rows of stars. This terrific
example features whimsical irregular stars that rotate
freely about their axis. Even the rows exhibit
charming irregularities, such as stars that dip below or
rise above the baseline. Some stars are nearly
touching, and overall the stars nearly fill the entire
space of the canton. These are wonderful
attributes for an early American flag, and overall the
flag is a great rarity considering the thousands upon
thousands of standard, mass-produced,
factory-manufactured 48 star flags made in the first
half of the 20th century.
