The
artwork of the Hudson Valley in the 19th century is
considered a school unto itself. Itinerant artists
of all degrees of skills traveled the valley captivated
by the myriad of incredible vistas--scenes which blended
majestic natural beauty and the growing towns and cities
of an new nation. Although this particular
painting is unsigned, the skills of the artist are
evident in the high quality of the work. The view
is of West Point from Cold Spring to the north, looking
south toward the academy grounds. To the
center-left of the painting we see the cluster of
buildings at West Point. Sailing ships, ever
present in 19th century scenes of the Hudson, make their
way along the river. Constitution Island juts into
the river from the left, and Storm King Mountain on the
right. Based on the style of the painting and the
appearance of the academy grounds the painting most
likely dates to the second quarter of the 19th century. |
