This
flag of 32 stars is an unusual example of an early star
count from a later period, most likely made to
commemorate the statehood of the state it represents.
Antique thirty-two star flags are very rare, regardless
of whether they actually date to the period of Minnesota
statehood (1858-1859) or the period of Minnesota
statehood's 50th anniversary, circa 1908-1909. I
am aware of only two other examples of this particular
flag. All are of the same size, with the same
6-5-5-5-5-6 pattern of stars, with zig-zag stitched
cotton stars on wool bunting. All of the
characteristics of the flag point to construction that
dates between the period of 1892, when zig-zag stitching
first became widely used, and the period circa 1925 when
the weaves of wool bunting used to make flags became
more more refined. The reason for this flag's
manufacture, in this star count at this later period, is
unknown and purely speculative. It might have been
made for one of the several international fairs, such as
the Columbian Exposition of 1892, the St. Louis World's
Fair of 1904, or the U.S. Sesquicentennial Celebration
of 1926. Whatever the reason, commemorative
antique flags with earlier star counts such as this flag
are very scare and are very desirable to flag collectors
who seek to round out their antique American flag
collection with one of each early star count, especially
when 32 star flags period to Minnesota statehood in 1858
are virtually non-existent. |
